Micro Spray Tape or Drip Tape? How to Choose
Micro spray tape and drip tape are both workhorse products in water-saving irrigation, but they deliver water and wet the ground in completely different ways. Using the wrong one in the wrong scenario not only wastes money, it can even hurt yields. This article starts from the working principle and explains the differences and how to choose in one go.
1. The Principle Difference: Drip Is Point Irrigation, Micro Spray Is Area Irrigation
Drip irrigation is localized irrigation: water travels through emitters or orifices on lateral lines about 10mm in diameter and is delivered drop by drop near the crop roots, with emitter discharge typically 2-12 L per hour. Because the water never passes through the air and never wets the leaves, evaporation loss is very small and water use efficiency can reach 95%.
Micro spray tape has orifices punched along the pipe wall at set spacings (e.g. 2-hole, 5-hole and 7-hole patterns). Once pressurized, fine water jets or misted droplets spray out of the orifices and cover the ground on both sides of the tape, wetting the whole strip — this is "area" irrigation.

3. Four Questions to Help You Decide
- 1. Crop type: Leafy greens, seedlings and lawns that need whole-area wetting — choose micro spray tape; row crops and fruit trees that need precise root watering — choose drip tape.
- 2. Row spacing: For narrow-row dense planting and multi-row greenhouses, one micro spray tape line can cover several rows; for wide-row crops, drip tape laid along the row saves more water.
- 3. Water quality: When the water source carries a lot of sand or algae, micro spray tape has larger orifices and better clogging resistance; with drip irrigation you must install a 100-120 mesh filter.
- 4. Budget per mu: The drip head unit (filter, fertigation equipment) costs relatively more, while micro spray tape means a lower overall investment. (1 mu ≈ 667 m²)
4. Two Common Misconceptions
Misconception 1: Micro spray tape always saves more water than drip. Actually the opposite — drip delivers water straight to the root zone with smaller evaporation and deep-percolation losses, so in theory it saves more water than micro spray. The advantage of micro spray tape lies in "even coverage" and "low price", not in the water saving rate.
Misconception 2: Drip works fine even with poorer water quality. Emitter channels are very fine (usually around 1mm), and sand, algae and chemical precipitates can all clog them. Drip irrigation must be fitted with a filter and flushed on schedule.
